PAS - an example of intermediate technology ;-)
This vehicle is the first known in Australia which had power-assisted steering. It ran on the Charters Towers (Queensland) to Millchester service for 40 years until 1960. The driver is now a museum guide, and recounts that when the bus got full, the steering used to get extremely heavy in the loose sand of the unsealed roads. One regular passenger was called Reuben Power. He was a miner, weighing over 140kg. The driver would yell out "Reuben: go sit at the back". Hence the phrase Power-assisted steering.
