Windows XP System Tray: prevent icons disappearing
E.g. keep 'safely remove hardware' icon displayed, as Tom, Graham and I were discussing last Friday. Here's the method, just in case it's of interest to others.
=========
right click on taskbar outside system tray
select Properties - opens window 'Taskbar & Start Menu Properties'
In lower half 'Notification Area' 'hide inactive icons' should be
ticked. Leave it so.
Click Customise - opens window 'Customise Notifications'
Find the 'item' you want, e.g. 'safely remove hardware',
and select it.
Dropdown list on right allows selection of how you want icon to
appear. I have 'Always show' for 'safely remove hardware', and a
(very) few others. Can't set ALL of them to 'always show', or the
systems tray becomes unmanageably large.

I did try to post this comment last week but for some reason it did not appear. I just wanted to confirm that having followed Keith's useful advice, my "safely remove hardware" icon is now back in the tray where it should be.
